What is it?
Matting is tightly tangled hair and is caused by a lack of regular professional grooming to remove the buildup of grease, dirt, dander, and dead coat.
So what?
Matting is extremely painful. Matting impedes blood flow to the skin and causes skin irritations and infections. It can cause behavior issues due to being in pain.
Now what?
As painful as being matted is for your pet, having those mats brushed out is even more painful, and downright inhumane. So what is the solution if your pet is matted? Shaving is the only humane option. Depending on the severity of the matting, your pet may need to be shaved under sedation at a veterinarians office. Getting on a regular professional grooming schedule (at least once a month) will prevent matting from ever happening again and keep your pet looking and feeling amazing.
